Behind the scenes...

So, you are curious about the technical side of Pixelfan? Well, as you probably already figured out, this site is powered by wordpress. In my eyes still one of the best, flexible and easy to learn web publishing softwares out there. Especially the "easy to learn" part is important... when you're like me, everything but a professional webdesigner 🙂

The look & feel and the functionalities of a wordpress site are obtained by the use of so-called themes and plugins... just google wordpress, theme, plugin... and you will find millions of results. So, which one to choose when creating a portfolio site for a photographer? Right, good guess... although I found several great and beautiful themes by experienced web-professionals, free & paid, I never found the one that perfectly fitted my requirements. So I had to make one myself and...you are now looking at the result.
Some of the functionalities that are already developed are :

  • Custom post for every picture
  • Custom taxonomies for Themes, Camera, Cities,...
  • Integration of google maps for every picture
  • Ajax loading of pictures on gallery and taxonomy pages
  • Filtering of pictures on gallery pages
  • Subscribe/unsubscribe to new posts or comments
  • Translate ready, and already translated to Dutch
  • ...and more to come...

Although I have the feeling that the development is a work in progress for a long time to come (I have multiple ideas for new functionalities), I think Pixelfan is the perfect theme for photographers. After all, I'm using it myself 😉
I don't plan to upload Pixelfan to all those theme-sites, developing wordpress themes is not my profession and I'm sure I didn't use the proper coding-standards 🙂 But if you are a photographer and you would like to use it for your own site... just drop me a line, I'm sure we can work something out...
